Umm...did he really just do that and other stories...

Life is a whirlwind and both boys are growing and doing so much I feel like I really can't keep up...so this post is chalk full of odds and ends stories from the past few weeks that have either tickled my funny bone or show that they are growing...growing...so fast...

Kegan:
* Fun word and phrases:
*"gummy gum" - bubble gum (Which he informed me when I told him he could not have any of mommy's bubble gum that "Pampa give little piece of gummy gum" to him...ah-ha!...)
* I love to say big words to him (that he has no clue what they mean) and have him repeat them back to me...because he repeats any "new" word I say to him, just about.
* "crane" - we have a new fascination with cranes and he points one out to me whenever we see one (surprisingly I don't think I ever realized how many cranes there were around here)
* "1 minute" or "4 minute" - if he is enjoying something and I tell him he needs to start cleaning up he will say this to me. Or...perhaps if I tell him he has one more minute to play he will say "4 minute". Then there are times he is switching between activities and as he starts the new one he will say "4 minute".
* Don't rush me" - Say what??? The other day he was doing his thing on the toilet and I went to check on him and asked if he was done, he looked at me and said "Don't rush me!" - well...excuse me (and for the life of me I can't think of where he heard that unless I told that to Matthew Sunday morning while I was finishing getting ready and he was ready to go...)
* Other stuff:
* Kegan's new favorite song - ABC...he will just randomly brake out in singing this song...of course he does forget a few letters, the same ones each time d,i, and u...I believe...it is always the same ones...but he is doing so well and is so very proud of himself
* This past weekend Uncle Kyle and Aunt Lindsay came in town and some of their friends came with them, who had a little 6 month old son. They were packing up the car and had left Barret in the house with us while they loaded their bags (this concerned Kegan) and he said "don't forget baby"...then while we waited for them to get back in the house, I asked him to sing "Jesus Loves Me" to the baby and he did...the whole thing, while rocking the baby in his car seat...awww!!! Good sign of things to come! :)

Ty:
* Where the title of this post comes from...
Yesterday (Monday, March 16, 2009) at just under 5 weeks old, Ty rolled over from his tummy to his back - no lie!!! He did it the first time and it shocked me, but I was like, no...it must have been a fluke, so I just put him back on his tummy, and as I sat and watched (while playing tractors) I saw Ty push and struggle with his feet for a bit and then flip...over he went again (1st time over his right shoulder and 2nd time over his left). Now I don't know if I count this as officially rolling from tummy to back...but still...my gracious!!! Please don't tell me crawling and walking will be so soon...haha!!! :)
* As of yesterday I feel like he has lost some of that "newborn" look to him (why so soon???). His eyes are still that puffy look, but not as much...and he is still lacking eyebrows, but his looks have changed some...and he is definitely growing. TOO FAST...it is just FLYING by!
* Lifting and turning his head is still his main trick and he is starting to do this better and higher. The video below is not the best of him doing it...he had been on his belly for a while turning his head before I thought to get out the camera...but it shows him moving around and making some grunts (for those of you to enjoy who have not seen him or seen him in a while). He also lifts his head well to look around when you are holding him up over your shoulder.


* His awake time is getting longer and more frequent and he is much more alert during wake time, now.

1 month old (His tummy looks HUGE doesn't it?) The white thing you see on his right arm is the gaze taped on from where they drew his blood...poor baby.

Thursday Kegan got to ride with Matthew in his 18 wheeler, while I went to the doctor...needless to say Kegan was THRILLED!!!

Tuesday
Happy St. Patrick's Day
(The orange shorts were a request by Kegan...some things are just not worth arguing over...so we went with it)

Kegan and I had been dancing to some music, together, till he decided he needed to provide his own music, so off he went to get his harmonica. When he came out playing it he kept telling me to "spin mommy" - aka dance to his music...

Another beautiful day - too pretty to stay indoors, so out we headed.
Ty did a little sun bathing (but not for long till he went into the shade on a bouncer...)

Kegan did a little, well a little of everything to do in the back yard, but we started with bubble blowing.

Chalk it up to lack of sleep

Yes oh yes.... my lack of sleep is showing. So...I had written a blog up on Tuesday, thought I posted it up, but while talking to my Mother-in-law today she told me the latest post she pulled up today was from last week. Hmmm...weird...I know I had written the post. Come home, check to see what is going on...and low and behold, guess who forgot to push the publish post button!...me the lady with no broken and crazy sleep...haha...sooo...look below to see some great pics and a doctors update on Ty...he is GROWING!!!!!

Aunt Wendy's Visit

Well I don't know who was more sad to see her go...or not be here Monday morning, Kegan (who kept and keeps asking where she is) or me (who really enjoyed the time spent with her and really enjoyed having the extra hands around to help out).

Wendy came in Wednesday evening to help me (THANK YOU!) for a few days and to meet Ty (whom she said was very cute...of course...and had forgotten how small newborns are...tell me about it). It was great to see her! I had been worrying about Kegan asking where Karsyn was when he saw aunt Wendy, but he did pretty good...only asking a few times. He has actually asked me about when he would get to see Karsyn again, more, since Wendy has been gone. I guess he figures, that playmate is gone, when will the next playmate come!?! I just keep telling him hopefully in a few months and we can all go to the beach...so naturally...a few months means he needs to ask in a few hours...oh well...at least he loves his cousin! We had a great time, found out my sister really is a pretty good cook (great job on all the meals, Wendy...especially that CAKE!), and can't wait to see her...and Karsyn and No no, again! :)

We went in for Ty's 2 month check-up today. New stats:
weight: 7 lbs 13 ounces (that is right...little boy is quickly packing on the pounds...that is 2 pounds 2 ounces gained since his lowest at 5 lbs. 11ounces - wow!
height: 20 1/2 inches (something like that...he was a bit squirmy on the table)

Ty also received his second hep B shot...did, ok...fussed a bit, but quickly fell right back to sleep.

We did have to go have some blood work done today because his first pku test came back irregular (possibly thyroid problems). When we went in to get the blood drawn it surprised me, she took out a mini-band (like they wrap around your arm to give blood, only smaller, and a syringe, with a long tube on it, that had a little needle at the bottom. Then he started looking for veins in his arms. I don't know why, but this just took me back for a moment - I guess I had figured they would take from his foot again, or in his leg...or somewhere bigger than his little arms. Ty did NOT like the band around his arm nor was he a fan when the needle went in, but once it was in and she took the band off, he settled down some. Anyways, back to the thyroid - the doctor had said not to worry, it could just be something with his protein levels, but he needed this test done. (worst case would be that Ty would need to be on thyroid meds the rest of his life) This afternoon the doctor called with the results. Praise the Lord, he said everything was ok, but that his proteins were low (whatever it is that carries things between the thyroid and liver) but that his free roaming thyroid hormones (the most important) were "smack dab in the middle of normal" and that whatever it is that send the messages between his thyroid and brain were good. Yeah!!! He will keep an eye on it - which means more blood work - over the next few months, then at a year, and 2 years, just to make sure nothing shows up. Sooo...a bit of a scare, but things seem ok. We will just keep praying that the Lord helps Ty and things continue to be ok.

Kegan continues to do well - just VERY VERY active...put that together with a 1 month old and I am usually one tired mommy by day's end :)...but I love it and wouldn't change it for the world!!!!

Friday (3/6)
Ok....so he really does not notice the green whale yet, but it looks like he is looking at and laughing at the whale...I just thought it was cute

We all met Matthew for lunch at the Cafe...super yummy! I just thought Kegan looked cute here - he was enjoying putting on his hat and daddy's hat
(ok, so Kegan is sitting here with me now and he just goes "picture, eat...Wendy's eating, too...Kegan eating" Wow...he remembered and could tell from the picture, cool!

Sunday (3/8)
We went over to the Setliff's a little before church that night so Kegan could play some with Gramma and Pampa (a Sunday favorite that he misses if we don't go see th em)...and I was not quite ready to go back to just me and 2 kids...hehe...(Matthew was out visiting with the church)
Still working out the neck...a few more inches, in lift, gained!

My Boys Are Growing Up

Both of them - a baby, yes, is expected to make fast changes and growth...but my 2 year old...why is he growing up so fast all of a sudden. Well, perhaps it has really been happening this fast all along, I just notice it more now when I see where he has come from.

Things are running a LITTLE more smoothly at the Setliff house hold. Ty is starting to get into his routine/schedule a little more and I am figuring out how to better blend the 2 boys schedules. Plus - we started back to Stroller Strides this week - it gets us out of the house, and Kegan back to his normal routine, which has been great for him. And, I think my body is becoming more accustomed to the 2 short spurts or 2 1/2 - 3 hours of sleep in the night :)! I can't complain though, technically, Ty only wakes up once in the middle of the night after his last 11ish feeding, then again at 6:30 or 7 in the morning - really not too bad. All in all...we are getting this down a little better...and things are running a little smoother. I must admit it helps that I have yet to have to cook a meal...and Matthew has taken Kegan with him to work the past 2 Fridays...but hey, small steps.

Why is Kegan growing up? Stories below:
1. First, I must say physically, he seems to be growing up and out...haha. Pants, new pants in fact, seemed to have just gotten shorter the past few days and last night I was trying to pus some button up pjs on him and the would not button...what??? They just fit him a few weeks ago!?!
2. Mr. Independent!!!
* Kegan makes breakfast! Sunday morning, I was finishing getting dressed(after getting Ty ready), Matthew was finishing getting ready (after getting Kegan ready), and Kegan was hungry. He went to the pantry and got out the breakfast bars, brought the box into the bathroom, opened it up, gave a bar to himself, a bar to Matthew, and a bar to me - haha...he made breakfast...get-t! :) Anyways, I guess he could get himself through breakfast now.
* Then he makes lunch...haha... Monday, I had gotten Kegan out of the car and sent him inside, while I was lifting Ty and the car seat out. All of a sudden, there comes Kegan out the door with a container of some left over pasta from the day before. Why the big deal...well, he had opened the refrigerator, moved the containers on top of the pasta container, closed the refrigerator, and carried the pasta out to me and said "Lunch Mommy"...so well we heated up lunch and ate. (It really was lunch time, so I guess he was hungry)...ok so he can now make it through till lunch...haha...
* "Me try" - still a favorite phrase in our home...super! Everything from brushing his teeth, to brushing his hair, to going to the potty, getting out his shoes, trying to take off and put on his shirt, going potty - everything he wants to do on his own. I must say he is getting pretty good at taking off his shirt (if his arm does not get stuck) and shorts before his bath. Then he likes to try and put his pants on by himself (well sometimes...sometimes I think he just sees it as easier for us to do it), but he has done it on his own. He will sometimes, now, go to the potty all by himself, without telling us or asking us for help, and just call us when he finishes. If we happen to go to the door while he is trying he says, "No mommy, go, me try." - ok! He wants to open the refrigerator and get his own drink or fruit. He wants to get his own crackers from the pantry.
* He wants to buckle his own seats - high chair seat and car seat. High chair, great - set him up there and he does the rest. Car seat, he can do the top and knows how to do the bottom to buckles, but is not strong enough to push them in...good thing, because that means he is not strong enough to push the button to release them!
ohhh...these are just a few I can think of, but he is DEFINITELY gaining some independence!
3. Monday I took Kegan and Ty out to the farm to see Matthew and for Ty to go on his first tractor ride. When we got out there, Kegan showed this new sense of confidence. Usually he points out a few things, here and there, but mainly I tell him what we are seeing and he observes. NOT MONDAY - from the moment we got out there, he began telling me all about the barn, what was in the barn, how things were hooked up, pointing out the engine to the sprinkler and telling me what it did...well "engine...sprinkler" (he knew what it was for), then while he was "driving" the trac tractor (his new favorite) he told me that there was no "hook" (his word for trailer) on it and kept looking around like Matthew does, like he knew what he was doing and was in control of it all - ohh...what 2 days of helping daddy on the farm did. So confident and sure of himself - it was cute...but made me see another way that he is not my baby anymore, but growing into a boy....
4. Random new word that has stuck out as funny:
"hitas" - fajitas (Matthew loves to get Kegan laughing and going by tickling him...specifically his sides...the "fajita" cut of meat, so Matthew taught Kegan to call his sides his fajitas. Along with this is a new found passion in tickling Mommy, Daddy, and Ty's fajitas...he gets a huge kick out of it)
5. Typical boy - when he poops in the potty or toots...he loves to make a big ado about it being "stinky...eww...gross"
6. Questions questions: He is so totally at that "ask a question about everything" stage...even if he just asked it, and knows the answer...ohhh...patience patience!!!
7. Conversation: His talking/speech is moving away from simple and familiar phrases, or just pointing out items and a few verbs here and there, to more of a conversation like speech (as pointed out to me by Sara, today). I guess I had noticed it, but not really, because it happens gradually, but after she said something it got me thinking. He really does create new sentences, say them, then re say them to make more sense (sometimes you can really see him thinking while he rearranges the words in a better way). He really wants to describe and tell all about things, using many words in a sentence or story to tell or ask something. I don't know if it that all made sense, but basically, we have more of a conversation now than just me talking and him answering or saying a few things here and there....makes for much more interesting car conversations. haha.... I know he has a long ways to go and grow...but it is fun to see his progress!
8. We always like to ask Kegan what he did/learned at school. Last Tuesday Matthew asked him and Kegan said "opposites"...what??? Did we hear that right? Did he really say opposite, like he knew exactly what he was talking about. Thursday I asked his teachers, and they looked surprised and said, Yes, we did talk about them and he was looking at a book about opposites on Tuesday. Well, there ya go - he knew exactly what he had learned...haha...

Why is Ty growing up?
1. Last Thursday Ty had his second doctors appointment
weight: 6 lbs. 10 oz (regaining and surpassing his birth weight...this also means almost gaining an entire pound in a week - wow!)
height: 20 inches
2. Well...I am thinking more and more that we have another refluxer on our hands...he is on 2 meds now for it...but not nearly what Kegan was on. Hopefully it does not get that bad, but let's just say I have had to do a few outfit changes because of his spit-up...and the back of his seat in the car has been blessed with a projected spit-up...we shall see how it all shakes out in the next few weeks, before his 1 month check up. (Which is NEXT week...oh my, can you believe it, almost a month old...ahhh!!!)
3. Strong neck - When laying on his belly he lifts his head and can turn it from one side to the other. While hold him he holds up his head for short periods of time.
4. He is FINALLY, just this week, starting to stay awake more frequently and for longer during the day....still not a lot, by any means...but more than he had been (which was almost no awake time except to eat)
5. Just a random funny - The child is gassy...he can't stretch at all with out something squeaking out...and Kegan loves to laugh and say "Ty tooted"...oh...just a glimpse at my future with 2 boys...haha!
